GL/Cost Accountant

Department: Finance

Reports To:  CFO


Perform advanced general ledger and cost-accounting work covering material and production costs, costs of sales, research and product development, etc.  To compare actual costs to estimates and analyze variances. 


  • Prepares and reviews income/expense analysis.
  • Manages/oversee day to day accounting activities in consultation with Production Planners/Schedulers at Five Star Marine and LA Blending plants.
  • Manage process improvement activities regarding system upgrades and accounting functions
  • Prepares standard cost updates for Item Master file.
  • Prepares and updates all standard cover costs.
  • Responsible for new-product cost estimates and providing recommendations for cost efficiency in new-product design.
  • Research variances and discrepancies as needed. Broadcast results.
  • Prepare JV operating statements and month end analyses.
  • Complete month end closing entries, reconciliations and analyses.
  • Review and audit BOM’s to ensure they reflect the latest manufacturing practices.
  • Analyze actual labor, material, and overhead cost against Standard/Budget. Research and explain variances. Report this information monthly or as needed.
  • Support the development of new labor and overhead rates, budget, and forecasts.
  • Perform ad hoc product/plant cost analysis to support the operations.


  • Assists in auditing and costing of all inventories.
  • Collect outstanding AR Accounts, post check and credit card receipts & make deposits.
  • Generate sales reports and daily dashboards.
  • Complete budget v actual reports for departments.
  • Assist in the annual budget process.
  • Performs and directs special projects as requested.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Some travel required to other Five Star Products facilities.


  • BS Finance or Accounting

Experience and Background:

  • Minimum of five (5) years' accounting experience.
  • Working knowledge of General Ledger as well as Cost Accounting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Strong Excel analytic skills including but not limited to vLookups and Pivot Tables
  • Manual and automated systems experience preferred.

  • Working conditions may involve some physical exertion, exposure to the elements or hazards inherent in the job which includes routine travel.
