R&D Project Manager

JOB SUMMARY:   

As project manager, you will provide structure and support for R&D projects to help us meet our goals. You will oversee the progress of complex, interdependent R&D projects, working collaboratively across the team to achieve important development milestones and keep the projects on schedule and within budget across their entire lifespans. This role is high visibility and contributes directly to our product and team's overall success.
You will spend most of your time developing, executing, and monitoring a project plan, with strong emphasis on team communication and problem solving. You will be deeply involved in all aspects of the project, ensuring accountability for the business and technical success of the solution from end-to-end (development to product hand-off to marketing). You must be efficiency-driven, looking for ways to improve project timelines and cost without sacrificing quality or customer satisfaction. Experienced project managers will expand their skillset to manage programs and applications areas within the R&D team. You will report to the VP of Operations and R&D.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follow all Five Star Products EHS programs
  • Serve as project leader for multiple, large volume and/or complex projects related to specified customer needs and ensure successful product transfers and company growth across multiple development sites 
  • Work with the R&D team to develop project plans, timelines, budgets, and resource requirements from initial concept start until delivery, product development, introduction in the commercial market, stabilization, and transfer into manufacturing  
  • Coordinate and facilitate project team meetings focusing on ensuring aligned understanding, clear communication, and identification of issues and blockers 
  • Direct the project(s) and project teams ensuring all necessary activities occur as planned or are negotiated and agreed to by the customer 
  • Coordinate scheduling of activities to meet customer demands and utilize expertise and experience to resolve concerns 
  • Propose and implement plans to rectify project issues and ensure that all affected team members are aware of any changes 
  • Identify process gaps, working with team leads and other team members to communicate gaps and work collaboratively to develop solutions 
  • Develop/improve processes to increase productivity and enhance performance 
  • Ensure Five Star Product policies and procedures are always followed with particular emphasis on ISO 9001:2015 adherence 
  • Successfully manage projects to achieve all quality, performance, schedule, and cost objectives in a cross-functional environment 
  • Prepare and present project updates to executive and steering committees 
  • May also interact with finance, marketing, sales, HR, operations, quality, EHS, tech services, and other support functions as appropriate

  • Manages projects and achieves desired results efficiently and on time 
  • Strong demonstrated experience in Six Sigma/Lean manufacturing concepts including time studies, DMAIC, 5S, Control Charts, Kanban, Standard Work, 7 Wastes, and other project and CI skills 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of key business financial metrics 
  • Excellent business analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Excellent time management, prioritization abilities, and project management 
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills with experience in communicating and working with a remote staff 
  • Proficiency with Project Management related and Microsoft Office Software Programs

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (preferred) or Science (required)
  • PMP certified or Equivalent certification on Project Management or Lean/Six Sigma Green Belt Certified (desired)
  • 5+ years of R&D experience or project management experience in a cross-functional role
  • Building Products experience (desired)

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Location - Shelton, CT
  • Travel - Up to 20% including field testing and site visits to LA & MS
  • Physical Requirements - Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
